Repair and Restoration

We have been repairing and restoring the stained glass windows since 2008.

After a search of more than five contractors in Virginia and elsewhere, we settled on Stained Glass by Shenandoah from Front Royal, Virginia.

The work has not been funded by the Church budget but by internal gifts at first and then primarily by grants. The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River region has been our major source.

The funds have primarily provided for repairs on the outside as opposed to the inside. This is the most vulnerable area due to forces of heat, wind as well as external objects that hit the windows.

Repairs are the basic work that needs to place once a generation. More substantive work is restoration. We have had two windows that needed restoration which involves removing the windowing and transporting it back to Shenandoah’s studios for most intensive work. One typical situation is when the window panes are bulging.

The typical work to restore a window takes place over a week and involves

1 Removing the existing protective covering
2 Scraping/plane exterior wood surface between protective covering framing and stained glass
3 Applying one coat wood preservative primer and two coats finish paint
4 Cleaning exterior of stained glass
5 Re-caulking stained glass perimeter and wood frame as needed
6 Fabricating and installing aluminum vented perimeter framing system (putty color)
7 Installing 1/4” laminated safety glass and seal system
